We received a call from a customer in Maumee, Ohio who just had a new concrete patio and sidewalk poured and needed some topsoil delivered and graded out.

We delivered 12 tons of our #1 premium topsoil and graded it out, and while we were there, we delivered some 411 berm for the parking area in the alley and spread it out and compacted it as well. The customer was very happy with the topsoil and the price.

In most cases, when you have new concrete installed, they dig the dirt out past where the concrete is going, so they can install and remove the forms easily. They also dig out enough dirt to add at least 4” of gravel below the concrete. Once they pour the concrete and pull the forms, you are left with about a one foot wide and 4”- 6” deep around the border of the concrete. It is important to fill this in with topsoil right away, so the stone does not wash out from under the concrete and leave a void. This will eventually cause the concrete to crack. When grading out the topsoil, it is important to leave the topsoil down 1” from the top of the concrete, so when the grass grows the water will still drain off the concrete. When grading the topsoil, remember to allow for settling as good friable topsoil will settle after it is installed.

Remember, it is also important to use high quality topsoil, so your grass will come in thick around these areas.
